5. April 24, 2010: Northern Black Rose, Siliguri: An agitation was held by Northern Black Rose at Bardhwaman Road near Siliguri in memory of Aligarh Muslim University Professor Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras. On February 10, 2010 Professor Siras had been suspended from the university and expelled from faculty housing because of his involvement in a same-sex relationship. He had been filmed in an act of consensual sex, which the filmers passed on to the university administration. Instead of being horrified at this blatant invasion of privacy, the authorities suspended Professor Siras just because his sexual partner was also a man.
Professor Siras had won the first round of the legal battle on April 1, 2010 from the Allahabad High Court where he had obtained a stay order on his suspension. He had even returned to his house, and this seemed like sweet victory in the face of immense trauma, harassment and humiliation. But Professor Siras was found dead in his home under unnatural circumstances on April 7, 2010.
The agitation on April 24, 2010 included individuals from the local civil society and administration: Dr. R. N. Bhattacharya, Professor of Community Medicine, North Bengal Medical College, Siliguri; Sasmita Ghosh, Professor of Netaji Subhas Open University; Surojit Adhikary, Counsellor, Child In Need Institute; and Advocate Anamika Choudhury.
