Care and Support
The resources in this section provide both background information on care and support services that may be rendered to improve the lives of children affected by HIV, as well as a variety of tools for implementing care, support, and treatment programs. Three sub-sections – Health & Nutrition, Psychosocial Support, and Education – provide more detailed information on specific areas of focus within the general real of support services.
The resources in this section acknowledge the importance of proper medical care and nutrition in slowing the progression of disease among HIV infected adults and children. Information on diagnosis, treatment and prevention of opportunistic infections and other HIV related illnesses, provision of ARV, clinical monitoring, and palliative therapies are included.
The resources in this section acknowledge the emotional toll that illness and death in the family takes on a child. The links included here provide information on the psychological effects that living with HIV has on children, as well as support mechanisms designed to help children understand and cope with the ways that HIV impacts their lives.
The resources in this section focus on the concern that children affected by HIV/AIDS may be absent from school frequently or for extended periods of time due to illness in the family. Many children affected by HIV are forced to either earn a wage or to act as care givers, if there are no other adults in the family able to fill these roles. Information on different models of providing education for children in distressed situations, information on public residential and education institutions, and policies and guidelines for school admissions are provided in this section.
